Seeing Ourselves in the Divine with Mary Moreno-Richardson

Episode Summary

When today’s guest was a little girl, her mother always reminded her, “You are the daughter of the Blessed Mother. Remember who you are.” Today, she offers that same reminder to other women and children, through the healing therapy of divinely inspired art. Rev. Mary Moreno-Richardson is a retired Episcopal priest and the creator/director of The Guadalupe Art Program, a spiritual empowerment program using the arts to heal violence against women and children. Focused on the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the most ubiquitous icon in Latino culture, participants explore, develop, heal and deepen their spiritual lives through the arts. Mary has served as a Delegate to the United Nations and as a member of the Committee of the Status of Women. She is the first Latina Priest ordained in the Diocese of San Diego, California, and her work has been featured on PBS, and in Latina Magazine, El Latino, La Frontera, and Episcopal Life. On today’s episode we discuss Mary’s connection to the Blessed Mother, how we can maintain our faith even while rejecting the structures of traditional religion, how the image of Guadalupe is helping women and children heal from violence, and where she finds hope, even amidst challenging times.
