On the latest episode, I have the privilege of speaking with Irish artist Dee Mulrooney, whose creative work includes painting, drawing, film, story-telling and performance art. I first got to know Dee through her remarkable performance piece “Growler,” an 81-year-old shamanic vulva living in exile in Berlin, Germany. Dee works with the alchemical aspect of transmutation in her art and she uses this process to deal with difficult topics, including abuse, death and loss. She has exhibited and performed numerous times in both Berlin and Ireland, and she is also the creative force behind the feminist “Holy Cvnt Collective” in Berlin. On today’s episode, Dee and I explore: ● Her spiritual background and how growing up Catholic shaped her views ● Why it’s important to find the sacred in the ordinary and mundane aspects of life (and why she’s not a big fan of the word “sacred”) ● Who Growler is and how she came into being ● How art functions as medicine for her, and how it has helped her work with collective feminine shadow ● What it means to use art as activism – “artivism”
